The LCCO String Ensemble,  under the direction of Vincent Povázsay, honored former cellist Manly Lucas with a memorial concert  in the Harper Center of First Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, May 23.
The program included Minuetto by Bolzoni; String Symphony No. 2 in D Major by Mendelssohn; String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, Op. 132 by Beethoven; and Suite for String Orchestra by Janacek.
This spring concert, a last-minute possibility in the 2020-2021 cancelled season, gave the musicians and audience impetus to look forward to a fully restored one for 2021-2022.

Manly Lucas (1939-2021)
It is with deep appreciation for his life among us that LCCO regrets the recent passing of cellist Manly Lucas.   He played with us from the beginning of our very first season, as verified by the presence of his name in the February 14, 1988 program for our debut concert under the direction of Harlan Due now at the Lee County Arts & Community Center.      He not only served as the heart of the cello section, he also shared his arranging and orchestrating skills as needs arose.  Manly remained active through December 2019, the last concert of LCCO’s shortened 32nd season.   We are grateful for his faithful service.
The following list of Manly Lucas memorial donations to LCCO will be kept up to date.   The people will be included as LCCO members in the first program of our 33rd season, whenever that turns out to be.

The Lee County Community Orchestra brings together some forty volunteer musicians of mixed ages and musical backgrounds. Members range in age from high school students to senior citizens, all focused on preparing and presenting free concerts for the community, which includes Sanford, Lee County, and the surrounding area. Some bring professional music experience to the mix and others offer the satisfaction of a hobby pursued, but all contribute their desire to learn to play well in an ensemble.
